Kandahar - The Lodge at Whitefish Mountain Resort

As seen in Vogue Magazine - Janaury 2012

Located in the wilds of northwestern Montana, Whitefish is an authentic Western town lined with colorful clapboard buildings. Enjoying a dream location, it is a half hour from the wonders of Glacier National Park and ten minutes from the heady downhill skiing at the Whitefish Mountain Resort. Despite an impressive roster of celebrity fans, the town continues to be known for its lack of pretension and the locals are determined to keep it that way. But by no means does this mean they’re devoid of attractions about which to boast: The people of Whitefish take pride in having Montana’s only professional Equity theater company (with John Lithgow on the board), a variety of art galleries, and its own literary magazine, the Whitefish Review.

VIBE: Aspen the way it was.

EAT: Café Kandahar, for chef Andy Blanton’s award-winning cuisine based on the best locally sourced ingredients; Tupelo Grille, specializing in Cajun and Southern cooking; Pescado Blanco, for “mountain Mexican” food.

HANG: The Great Northern Bar and Grill is the most popular spot in town while the Great Northern Brewing Company, across the street, has big views of Big Mountain and the Whitefish Range. Up on the mountain, Bierstube, the Hellroaring Saloon, and Ed & Mully’s pack in the après-ski set. Back in town, Montana Coffee Traders has the best morning brew.

CELEBRITY FACTOR: Harrison Ford, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, and Bruce Springsteen.

DON’T MISS: The World Skijoring Championship, January 27–29, an exciting extreme sport that has skiers being pulled around an obstacle course by cowboys on horseback. Skijoring is just one highlight of the Whitefish Winter Carnival (January 6–February 5) that also features parades, snow queens, coronations, parties, and fireworks. Most of all, visit—by snowshoe and/or cross-country skis—Glacier National Park, impossibly beautiful, 35 miles away; Glacier Adventure Guides has daytrips as well as moonlight tours; glacieradventureguides.com.
